Ho Chi Minh City Accelerates Transition to Advanced Waste Treatment Technology

(HTV) - Major urban centers like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have recently implemented various pilot projects for waste sorting at the source; however, waste collection and treatment processes have not yet achieved optimal efficiency.
In reality, approximately 85% of waste is currently disposed of via landfilling, with only about 20% of these sites meeting sanitary standards. Identifying and adopting new waste treatment technologies that align with the circular economy model is now considered an urgent priority.
Recently, Japan granted exclusive rights to SCM Vietnam for a waste treatment technology utilizing subcritical water hydrolysis. This solution will be piloted at the Northwest Waste Treatment Complex in Ho Chi Minh City, a facility spanning over 36 hectares. Experts highlight several advantages of this technology: it eliminates the need for waste sorting at the source, reduces CO2 emissions by nearly 90%, produces no harmful dioxins, effectively treats hazardous waste (such as medical and electronic waste), offers high sterilization capabilities, and enables energy recovery in line with circular economy principles.

Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Phuoc, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Science and Technology Associations, stated: "The subcritical water waste treatment technology transforms waste components into fuel products—similar to firewood or timber—that can supply thermal power and cement plants." According to Professor Ishimori Kaneo, the inventor of the near-critical hydrolysis technology, this waste treatment method has already been implemented in Japan, the United States, and several European countries. The success of these projects has given the team the confidence to introduce and develop the technology in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to address the pressing issue of urban waste.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Nhi Phong, General Director of SCM, stated that following the exclusive technology transfer, the company plans to establish a manufacturing facility in Vietnam. The goal is to connect government agencies, businesses, and the public in utilizing this technology to optimize both input and output costs. Manufacturing locally in Vietnam will result in lower investment costs compared to implementation in countries like Japan, the US, or those in Europe.
A representative from SCM Vietnam also noted that utilizing the local workforce presents a distinct advantage for the application of this modern waste treatment technology.
